Title of the research project: Exploring UK Healthcare Workers’ Working Lives and Wellbeing

Invitation to participate
You are being invited to take part in a research project. Before you decide, it is important that you understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and contact the research team if anything is unclear or if you would like more information.

What is the purpose of the project?
This study is about understanding how you experience communications daily, especially the moments when you choose to say or report something, hold back, or decide it’s not worth the effort. You’ll start with a one-time survey about your role, work environment, and general experiences at work. Then, for seven days, you’ll be asked to briefly reflect on situations where you chose to say something or chose not to, and how those situations felt. These reflections will help us understand how communication is experienced across different healthcare roles.

Why have I been chosen?
You have been invited to take part because you are currently working in UK healthcare, and your experiences are important to understanding how staff communicate about things that matter at work. To take part, you must hold either a permanent contract or a fixed-term contract that is at least 12 months in length. Unfortunately, we are not able to include NHS Bank staff or those on short-term or casual contracts in this phase of the study.

What do I have to do?
You’ll start with a one-time online survey (about 15 minutes) asking about your role, work environment, and typical experiences at work. Within 72 hours, you’ll be invited to complete a short daily diary for 7 days (5–10 minutes per day), ideally at the end of your workday. The diary will ask about times you chose to say or not to say something you were thinking at work and how those moments felt. You’ll receive SMS reminders with a secure link each day. At the end of the week, you may be invited to give brief feedback, this is optional. To send reminders, we’ll ask for your email and/or mobile number. These will be stored securely and separately from your responses, which are fully anonymised. As a thank you, everyone who completes the study will be entered into two prize draw to win one £50 or one £100 Gift Pay voucher.

Do I have to take part?
Participation is entirely voluntary. If you choose to participate, you can withdraw at any time without giving a reason. You may also request to withdraw your data up to 14 days after completing the first questionnaire by contacting the lead researcher via email at o.lainidi@leeds.ac.uk and quoting your unique participant ID. The survey will close in the end of September 2026.
