Drink alcohol often? (Baltimore) $4525

NIDA is enrolling participants for a clinical trial in the Washington–Baltimore metropolitan area. You may qualify if you are at least 21 years old, drink alcohol frequently, and are not currently in treatment or looking for treatment during the study.

This research study, led by Dr. Leggio, will investigate the safety and tolerability of the medication Spironolactone to understand how the body breaks down this drug and its side effects in people who take this medication while drinking alcohol.

Participation requires four separate 7-day stays at a clinic in Baltimore. Once enrolled, you will be asked to take the study medication spironolactone or a placebo and not to drink alcohol for the first five days of each clinic stay until the 6th day, when you will be asked to drink alcohol in a bar-like area in the clinic. Additional tests will include blood tests, urine tests, breath and blood alcohol level tests, a DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan to measure bone density and muscle mass, electrocardiograms to record your heart activity, as well as questionnaires and tasks to perform to test your mood, craving, mental and physical coordination after drinking alcohol.

Completing the study can earn you up to $3,075 in compensation. If you opt-in for additional overnight stays, the compensation can reach $4,525. Transportation or travel reimbursement for all your visits can also be provided.
