Could you help shape the future of Deafblind research?
Researchers at University College London (UCL) are looking for Deafblind adults who use tactile British Sign Language (BSL) to take part in a paid focus group exploring how research involving Deafblind people can become more accessible, inclusive, and respectful.
Before launching a wider research project into tactile communication, the team wants to hear directly from the Deafblind community to ensure the research itself is designed in the right way. It is an excellent example of involving people with lived experience from the very beginning.
Who can take part?
The research team is looking for people who:
✔️ Are aged 18 or over
✔️ Are Deafblind (or have dual sensory impairment)
✔️ Use tactile or hands-on BSL as one of their communication methods
✔️ Live in the UK
You do not need to use tactile BSL all the time. The study is also open to people who use visual BSL when signing can be seen clearly.
What does participation involve?
• An in-person focus group at DCAL, UCL in London
• Tuesday 8 September or Wednesday 9 September 2026
• Around two hours in length
• Payment of £15 per hour
• Agreed travel, communication and access support costs covered by the research team.
Participants will be selected to ensure a diverse range of lived experiences, so places are not allocated on a first come, first served basis. The closing date for expressions of interest is 11:59 pm on Sunday 9 August 2026.
