Robotics companies racing to build machines that can weld steel and stitch shoes are turning to an unlikely workforce to teach them how, ordinary Indian laborers filming their own daily tasks, effectively training the very robots that could eventually replace them. Bloomberg's feature, alongside reporting from AFP, Al Jazeera, and Dawn, documents how thousands of Indian workers are now strapping smartphones and head cameras to themselves to capture first-person footage for AI-powered robotics firms competing to collect this valuable training data.
The pay is modest but steady, workers earn around 250 rupees, roughly $2.60, for an hour of recorded footage. Chennai housewife Nagireddy Sriramyachandra, 25, described filming herself slicing mangoes in her own kitchen, telling AFP and Al Jazeera she takes the work simply because nobody else pays that rate just for doing housework, adding half-jokingly that she might end up owning a robot herself someday. At a Karur textile factory in Tamil Nadu, AFP observed eight workers wearing head cameras and smart glasses supplied by data firm Objectways while attaching labels to caps and ironing cloth bags, footage the company reportedly feeds into systems built for major clients, including Amazon SageMaker, according to Dawn.
This so-called "egocentric data" matters specifically because it captures hand-eye coordination, object interaction, and real-world context from the worker's own point of view, information researchers say is far more valuable for training robots than simulated three-dimensional environments. Spandan Roy, associate professor at the Robotics Research Centre at IIIT Hyderabad, told Scroll.in this kind of footage offers a genuinely cost-effective way to feed AI systems the variety and versatility needed to handle diverse real-world tasks. Digital labor expert Aditi Surie of the Indian Institute for Human Settlements in Bengaluru told AFP she expects this kind of data collection work to keep expanding as India positions itself as a global middleman for creating, processing, and labeling AI training data.
That growth carries real risk for the workers themselves though. Gadget Review reports some factory workers earn as little as $1 an hour generating data that ultimately proves worth billions to robotics firms, often without clear consent, fair compensation, or any ownership rights over the footage capturing their own bodily movements. India's government think tank NITI Aayog has acknowledged this blind spot directly, noting most conversations about AI and labor focus almost entirely on white-collar job losses, warning that little attention has gone toward how the technology will affect India's roughly 490 million informal workers who form the backbone of the country's economy. Beyond factories and kitchens, Gadget Review notes construction workers, delivery drivers, street vendors, and home-service laborers are increasingly being recruited for similar filming work too.
With workers effectively monetizing the sunset of their own manual labor, does this arrangement represent a genuine, if imperfect, economic opportunity for India's informal workforce, or does it expose a troubling absence of protections around consent and compensation as this data industry scales rapidly?
